Fall,  Travel

View from the gallery

By the time I entered the Wilhelmshöhe Palace museum in Kassel, Germany, a soft rain had started to fall. Two flower girls dressed in long red gowns holding a black umbrella were rushing towards the building’s right-wing where a marriage was taking place. Some walkers continued their evening walk while others were running to the parking area to escape the rain. Autumn suits this picturesque hillside park of 590 acres extending from the palace plateau up the hill to the Heracles cascades. It was almost four o’clock when I entered the Old Masters Picture Gallery. The paintings brought back memories of my studying period in art and my need to closely see what I have studied. But part of me was inside, and part of me was outside as I couldn’t take my eyes out of the panoramic view from the gallery’s tall windows to the landscape, which was immensely inviting. Variations of green, red, and yellow coming from the trees were competing with the autumn fog, allowing me to view only for a short time some hidden spots either around the lake or the pavilion. I tried to spot the colossal statue of Heracles on top of the hill. Impossible as a thick autumn fog has utterly covered it. I smiled at the thought that mother nature may be considered the absolute  master. As for Heracles, the son of Zeus today, had the privileges of some privacy.
